Goodbye Twitter Verification, Welcome Twitter Blue!

On November 9, 2022, the Twitter verification process (the blue checkmark) changed, as well as the whole legacy verification policy. Say hi to Twitter Blue!

According to the Twitter website:

These changes are designed to help reduce fake, untrustworthy accounts, and promote a higher quality Twitter where people can join and engage safely on our platform.

Twitter Verification Eligibility Criteria

So far, Twitter’s verification policy has been based on three major criteria. To apply for the trendy blue badge, your account must be:

  • Authentic
  • Notable
  • Active

You also had to set a category and subcategory to your account: Government, Company, Activist, Influencer, etc.

These criteria are no longer applicable. From now on, you need to opt-in for a paid monthly premium subscription.

You’re lucky if your Twitter account was badged before November 9, 2022. The old legacy verification policy will still be applicable. After that date, you need a Twitter Blue premium subscription.

Good to Know

  • Twitter Blue is currently available only in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, and exclusively for in-app purchase on Twitter for iOS.
  • Twitter Blue subscribers will be unable to change their display name after receiving a blue checkmark. Twitter will be implementing a new process in the future to allow naming changes.
  • Twitter reserves the right to remove your blue checkmark at any time in its sole discretion without offering you a refund (ie. if you violate their Terms of Service)

Happy tweeting everyone!

Update: Two days after it was launched, Twitter users reported that the sign up option for Twitter Blue is no longer available in the iPhone app. Twitter appears to have paused/suspended its new service after a wave of impostor accounts approved by Twitter. Users paid $7.00 to appear ‘verified’ while parodying everyone from Pope Francis to George W Bush.
